What is 'Ad Finem'?

It is often said that the last words a person utters before they die carry a special importance, and can often be the most significant of their lives. Indeed books have been written about the last words of famous people.

During the last 6 hours prior to Christ’s death, seven statements fell from his lips. Few Christians are able recall all of these statements, yet these brief sentences spoken by the Saviour, contain His sacred parting instructions, not only for the immediate hearers, but for all generations.

ad finem, means ‘to the end,’ or ‘at the end,’ and was often used as a battle cry towards the final moments of victory, urging 'keep fighting to the end'.

In this lent study, we explore the significant statements Christ made ‘at the end,’ considering their importance, and understanding the implications they have for us today. When we plumb the depths of their meaning, delivered from this cross shaped pulpit, we begin to comprehend why the only disciple who stood at the foot of the cross listening to these words, wrote later in his gospel, Jn 13:1 - "He loved them to the end."
